Holiday Cheer

Went through the holiday ritual of hustling the little ones off to the mall to sit on Santa's lap and have very expensive low-quality pictures taken tonight.

The positive side? The kids are all still young enough to believe he's real, and that the guy in the mall is really him. Made it easy to overcome any distractions or objections as we wound our way through the throngs of holiday shoppers, and the teens who actually own the place - socially anyway.

The negative side? It was a mall. During the holidays. I had a splitting headache before we even left the house.

The kids were mostly well behaved. Not remotely photogenic of course. If anyone knows how to get a 4 1/2 year old, a 2 year old, and an 8 month old to look at the camera at the same time, much less all smile for the camera, patent that secret and sell it for a zillion bucks. Santa's "helpers" sure as h*ll don't know how, and they charge thirty bucks a pop.

Incidentally, Santa was an authentic portly white-haired gent, with a nice smile when the camera was ready. Not terribly jolly though. Didn't even ask the kids what they wanted for Christmas. Albeit, I think he had been there since 10am, and we were there at about 6:30pm. So I wasn't going to risk an angry elfburst by pointing out the lack of any "Ho, ho ho's."

And now after a rather long and hairy day, I finally have the chance to pour myself a little glass of holiday cheer and relax. Shrek 2 is on tap for later tonight. And that's about as deep as I care to go at the moment. Cheers!

Enjoy the adult beverage, you've earned it. Thankfully our 16 year old (daughter) has no desire to visit Santa but there are other concerns! Actually a visit to the mall and Santa might be preferable, splitting headache or not. Enjoy your time while they are young.
